What to Expect When You Pick-Up a Brett Nelson Novel

As a relatively new author, I’ve found it difficult to gather momentum in finding a broader audience who wants to pick up my books and give me a chance to entertain them. When I first started writing, I thought completing the book would be the hardest part, but it turns out I was wrong! The hardest part is letting people outside my circle know I’m here and getting my books into their hands.

I understand people’s reluctance in picking up a book from an author they’ve never heard of because, honestly, until a year ago, I was the same way. I was a book snob who only wanted to read the bestselling authors I liked, and I didn’t give a cursory glance to any author who wasn’t a household name. Finally, I realized that we unknown authors, in our rare moments of spare time, need to read the work of other unknown authors.

Which brings me to the focus of this blog. For those who don’t personally know me, you may wonder what to expect when you pick up one of my novels. To date, I’ve published three novels, with a fourth coming in Spring 2022. My first three novels are clean romance, although I deviated from my typical genre in my upcoming fourth novel. Maybe I’ll share more about that in an upcoming blog.

When you pick up one of my novels, you won’t experience profanity, sexual themes, or any other types of vulgarity, because in my opinion, which, I’m aware, is worth no more than the piece of “paper” this blog is written on, none of these things add anything of significant value to the work I’ve spent the past year writing.

Is my writing style perfect? No, far from it, but I’m learning as I go. I’m currently in the process of republishing my first novel, “A Christmas to Live For,” because in my writing journey, I realized it needed a little extra polishing.

When I first began writing, I knew nothing about proper syntax, overuse of passive voice, and I used adverbs WAY too liberally. I didn’t know what I know now, and you know what? While it’s embarrassing to me to know people have read it, the imperfections in the book are perfectly fine. It’s what we call learning, which we’ll do every day until we die. The story will not change, but I fixed the overall writing style. The revised version of the novel will re-release in July 2021, and hopefully my readers will enjoy a better-written story.

Another thing you can expect from one of my novels is a touch of my faith. While my first book has heavier Christian themes than the rest, I try to infuse a touch of my faith into every book. For those of you who just want a good, clean read, that’s what I want you to find within the pages of my novels—just enough faith that you won’t feel I’ve cracked you over the head with my Bible (because I would never do that to you.)

In short, when my readers turn the last page of my novel, I hope they’ve been entertained and encouraged. I hope they’ve laughed a lot and maybe even enjoyed a good healthy cry or two. I hope they’ve gone through the journey with my characters, and that I’ve left readers wanting more.

For those who’ve read my books—many, many thanks. I’m humbled.

For those who haven’t yet had the opportunity—what are you waiting on?? I’m here and ready to welcome you into my world.
